Any parent who has ever traveled with their children can tell you that it's not always a picnic. Many times, small children don't understand what's happening and their already short attention span and patience levels quickly wear down. If you've ever been on a flight with an unhappy child or a tired, cranky toddler, you know what can happen. The good news is that there are a number of things that you can do to get ready for your trip that creates the likelihood of a peaceful flight or cartrip that will make the journey far more enjoyable for you and your fellow passengers. First tip is this: always pack medicines. Even if everybody looks as healthy as they possibly could, it's always better to plan ahead than to find yourself with a child in pain who cries all the way through a flight. You want to be prepared to battle everything from upset stomachs and headaches to bug bites and scrapes. Make sure your children are well-hydrated and have enough to eat. You can often prevent a lot of unhappiness by keeping an eye out for low blood sugar and carrying the appropriate snacks with you. One very clever way to keep your children entertained on long car rides or flights is to have a number of new items hidden away that you present them with throughout the time you are traveling. In general, once they bore of one toy and fail to find another way to entertain themselves is the perfect time to bring out the next item. Whether you're handing out new play-toys to toddlers, or books to your school-age children the important thing is that they're something new that the child has not seen or read before. Novelty is part of what keeps them entertained. Having music or books-on-tape can be a great way to entertain kids of all ages, especially if you know it is something they have been wanting for a while. Once you've arrived at your travel destination, especially if you are traveling with small children, you are sure to want the following two items: a stroller and a portable highchair. If you're worried about space restrictions and traveling with too much "stuff," stop worrying. Travel strollers are available in many sizes and shapes and these days most all of them fold down to a very manageable size. The same goes for highchairs. Why, I have seen versions out there that have folded down to only a few inches in size and weigh about two pounds! They just clip right onto the table wherever you go. Sure beats holding the child in your lap or setting them up on a teetering pile of phone books!
