An opportunity to earn college level credit

By: brain strom

Advanced placement chemistry is a course and examination that is offered by the college board which is a part of Advanced Placement Program to give American and Canadian high school students an opportunity that demonstrates their abilities and earn them a college level credit. The course is highly motivated towards students who are interested in chemical and physical sciences including biological sciences. It prepares a student to participate the AP Chemistry exam towards the end of the academic year. The course includes study of topics like atomic theory, phases of matter, chemical bonding, solutions, types of reactions, equilibrium, reactions kinetics, and also thermodynamics.

The course is designed keeping in mind the equivalency of general chemistry course which is usually taken during the first college year. The course also enables some students to undertake as freshmen, second-year work in chemistry sequence at their institution and also to register them for courses in any other fields where general chemistry may be a prerequisite. For some student, the course also fulfills the laboratory science requirement and frees time for other courses. The course should meet the standard of a good general chemistry course where the students attain a depth of understanding reasonable competence and fundamentals in dealing with understanding chemistry and chemical problems. The course helps in developing the students abilities to think clearly and to express their ideas with clarity and logic.

The course offered by different colleges would differ qualitatively and quantitatively depending upon the kind of textbook used, topics covered, the kind of work done by students in the laboratory, chemical calculations and mathematical formulations. Quantitative differences would appear in a number of topics treated, the time spent on the course by a student, and also the nature and variety of experiments done by the students in a laboratory. The course provides a good laboratory experience to the student that must be equivalent to that provided by any college course. The AP chemistry course develops the requisite intellectual and laboratory skills of a student along with his adequate classroom and laboratory time. In addition to this the students opting for AP chemistry also require a need to spent at least 5 hours a week studying outside of class.

AP chemistry can change the life of a student. Through AP exams the student gets an opportunity to earn a credit or even an advanced standing at most of the nation’s colleges and universities. Through college-level AP studies one might enter a universe of knowledge which otherwise might have left unexplored by the student. The student gets a head start on college-level work and studies to improve his writing skills and also sharpen problem solving techniques.
