Artist Istanbulart Fair 2008

By: Michele De Capitani

But also Turkish art is becoming more and more important, and this is demonstrated by the art fair that takes place every year in Berlin, the ARTIST/ Istanbul Art Fair, a huge exhibition featuring paintings, ceramics, photos and videos realized by over 6000 artists. From the 1st until the 9th of November the Turkish capital city will host the 18th edition of this event, which is become an important meeting point for well-known artists, professionals working in the artistic field, but also for young artists, who are not famous yet, and art lovers.

When the fair was created, in 1991, it was not such a big event, and it hosted 39 exhibitors in a 1,250 m² space, but now, after 18 years, it attracts more than 100 exhibitors every year, and it is hosted in a 15,000 m² space.

The fair is an important opportunity to discover Turkish art and to promote it not only within the national boundaries, but also worldwide, also thanks to the cooperation of Turkish and international galleries, which permits to create a connection between Turkish and foreign art. To promote Turkish art, the fair hosts many different events, which are all interesting. Galleries’ owners will present the works realised by the artists that they have discovered, and in this way they will give them a great help. Moreover, visitors will have the possibility to admire some works which are usually not to be seen, because they are part of a private collection including paintings realised by famous Turkish artists. But the fair does not give space only to famous artists, on the contrary, emerging artists too are held as important, and indeed during the fair students of fine arts faculties will have the chance to display their works, and in this way they will have the possibility to meet art lovers, critics, scholars, and professionals. Furthermore, the fair will host many debates, conferences and discussions during which visitors will have the possibility to go into the world of art and to get to know different opinions and points of view.

Turkish art is the main feature of this event, but one of the aims of the fair is to look to the external world, and to get to know the different ways of expressing creativity. In this sense an important role is played by the Koridoor Contemporary Art Programs, which organises a particular exhibition, which is expected to contribute the dialogue between the West and the East through Turkey and Istanbul, the only city in the world to straddle two continents, with one arm reaching out to Asia and the other to Europe. Art, in this fair, is not seen as a business activity, and works are not seen as products to be sold. Art, this seems to be the message of the fair, has got more important aims, and for this reason the fair is meant to make everybody know and appreciate this world. Art, indeed, is not only reserved for elites, but for everyone who is able to appreciate it and get something from it.

The fair is made even more interesting by the close relationship that is has with another important event hosted in the capital city, the Book Fair. The two fairs, indeed, take place in the same days and in the same exhibitory space, and visitors have the possibility to enjoy two of the most important cultural events in Istanbul at the same time.

Istanbul is an appealing city, where past and present meet together. The city has always been Turkey commercial, historical and cultural core, and now it is a metropolis knocking on Europe’s door. It is certainly worth a visit, and if you want to be sure to find a nice place where to stay, we suggest that you book a budget hostel in advance.
