Surrounded by computer experts and a detail of Secret Service Men, even the presidential candidate was not immune to a malware scam. Millions of the former First Ladys supporters and constituents received an email entitled Hillary Clinton Full Video!! The email did not contain a video of Mrs. Clinton; it had absolutely nothing to do with her in fact. Instead, the email contained an intrusive, annoying and sometimes dangerous malware scam. Malware is a combination of two words --- malicious and software. And, in this case, the name says it all. Malware is computer software or a computer code that is installed onto the computers of unknowing and unsuspecting computer users. Some people refer to malware as a computer virus; that is not accurate, actually. While malware can contain computer viruses, it may also contain other intrusive components like adware, spyware and spam. Many computer users dont know what malware is; even the media uses the term incorrectly on a regular basis. Some describe malware as a computer virus, it isnt. Malware is a computer program or code that was developed strictly to interfere with computers around the world. Malware interferes by many means; adware, spyware, Trojan horses, rootkits and viruses are all found in malware. Some malware installs viruses that completely delete the users files; often, this can go undiscovered for a short while. The most dangerous computer viruses will slow the computer down, shut-it down and/or cause irreparable damage. Perhaps it is easiest to understand how malware operates by following the process in the Hillary Clinton email. Millions of in-boxes received the email and many people opened it they had no reason to suspect it was malware. Thats the really dangerous thing about malware; it operates totally undercover and without your consent. Once opened, users were asked to click on a link which resembled a link to a Google search page so far, so good. This is precisely where the problems begin; when the link is activated the malware installs itself onto the operating system it is not a link to Google at all. Once activated, the malware begins to weave its web of deceit quickly through adware, spyware, Trojan horses, rootkits and computer viruses. Users can be bombarded, in a matter of minutes, with pop-up-ads (many of them, appearing one after another) and copious emails. One of the most damaging effects this type of malware delivers is the ability to delete all of your files; and you wont even know it has happened until it is too late. Deleting users files does happen but is far more common that malware will be used to install even more unsolicited (and unwanted) software into the system. Why would someone want to do this? There is no fool-proof way to avoid Malware scams; you can reduce your chances, though, by being on the look out for email that comes from an unknown or suspicious address.
