Sentient Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint

By: SimonSkinner

The selection process of any Breeders' Cup race is one that requires excellence and performance. The same is true for the Sentient Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. There is a maximum of 14 starters in each of the Breeders' Cup races and this particular race limits those starts to three year olds and up.

With a distance of 7 furlongs, these mares are adequately tested for their performance at short distances. The purse is for $1 million and provides adequate motivation for owners, trainers and jockeys to ensure that the females of the horse racing industry perform at their best. The Sentient Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint is a weight for age race and is run on a dirt course, whether natural or synthetic. Weight is assigned based on the Weight for Age Scale and varies depending on the distance of the race and the month of the year. This weight category is considered to be used only for the races of highest quality, which includes Grade I stakes races.

The Filly & Mare Sprint was first ran in 2007 as one of the expansion races at the Breeders' Cup that year and was first held on Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. Due to technical requirements the race is not eligible as a graded stakes race in its first two runnings, although it will be considered a Grade I stakes race. The race's first run was held at 6 furlongs instead of the 7 furlongs due to the configuration of Monmouth Park.

The first filly to win the Filly & Mare Sprint was Maryfield in 2007 at 6 furlongs with a time of 1:09.85. The filly was ridden by Elvis Trujillo and trained by Doug O'Neill. The filly is owned by Mark Gorman, Nick Mestandrea, Jim Perry and Mark Verge.

The next running of the Sentient Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Sprint is scheduled to take place at Santa Anita in October 2008. Horseracing enthusiasts will be able to view a whole new field of 14 contenders this year with several of these ladies already having impressive numbers and several thousands of dollars in winnings under their belts. Several of these mares and filly's have begun their racing careers with modest winnings in small claiming races at tracks such as Lone Star Park and Del Mar, but have proved to be of the highest competition as they have traveled the US in their careers and are now heading towards a chance at a world championship.
