So, you're heading to the beach, or maybe the grocery store. You've got your keys, your wallet and a shopping bag. All you need now is your shoes. Do you put everything down and bother to tie a pair of tennis shoes? Of course not, you slide on a pair of flip flops and you're ready to go. Perhaps you're feeling stylish with some embellished flip flops, or maybe you're rocking a pair of designer flip flops for the first time. Whether they are sexy flip flops meant to impress or a plain thong sandal, the shoes you are wearing have a much longer history than you probably ever knew about. By most accounts, flip flops were first worn in ancient Egypt. Hieroglyphics and other imagery that we have to base this claim on depicts a style of shoe that is quite similar to those cheap rubber flip flops we're so fond of today. It is also well-known that flips flops have, for centuries, been popular in the East. They are traditional wear in countries such as Japan, China and New Zealand. The shoes were popularized in both the United States and New Zealand by returning soldiers after WWII. These servicemen had been introduced to the Japanese zōri while oversees. Zōris were woven sandals, as it was another decade or so before manufacturers began making designer flip flops out of rubber or plastic. In cultures where one's shoes are customarily removed at the door, it is common to wear such easily removable shoes as flip flops. They are often also provided for use in restrooms in such circumstances. Those in the military are probably also familiar with the use of flip flops in the restroom. Both American and European military forces recommend that their soldiers use flip flops to wear in the shower facilities as a way of providing personal sanitation services- this serves to slow or stop the spread of fungus such as that which causes the common affliction known as athlete's foot which spreads easily in such moist environments. You'll find this use for flip flops all over in public as well- the next time you're at the pool or the gym, look around. It's likely that most people there will be wearing flip flops in the showers! However, they're probably wearing the cheapest, most unadorned flip flops for these more practical situations, reserving those fancy embellished flip flops for special occasions. From ancient Egypt, to the military, all the way to the red carpet, flip flops are some pretty versatile shoes. You will find simply rubber and plastic thongs that will only last you for one season at the beach just about anywhere you go during the summer. You can also find more pricey, but also higher quality, designer flip flops from many a footwear guru, including the likes of Stacie Bass. No matter what your style or where you're going, it's likely that there is a pair of flip flops out there that will be exactly the right shoe for you!
