The Adult Erotic Gay Video Awards began in 1991 as a list in the back of the year end issue of Gay Chicago Magazine. The list included honors such as Comeback of the Year, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Newcomer. The Adult Erotic Gay Video Awards continued for a third year in 1993 and added Best Ethnic Performer and Best Cum Shot to the list of honors to be given out, and in 1994 saw the additions of Best Director, Best Bisexual Video, and the Whopper Award. On May 29, 1999, the Grabbys were presented for the first time during an awards ceremony in Chicago. It was a fundraiser for the Reimer Foundation, which promotes safe sex through education and public awareness. In attendance at the ceremony were gay video actors, directors, fans, and media from all over the country. Honey West and porn director Chi Chi LaRue were co hostesses for the program. Tickets for the Adult Erotic Gay Video Awards are available to the public, in contrast to other similar gay video award ceremonies. Other awards are invitation only awards, open to participants and journalists only. The Adult Erotic Gay Video Awards allows fans and performers to mingle, socialize, and appreciate each others role in the success of the gay video industry. The Grabbys also show short clips of the x rated nominated scenes, unlike other awards ceremonies. There are also two skimpily dressed men who act as the Trophy Studs, handing the awards to the presenters. The Adult Erotic Gay Video Awards are known to have plenty of excitement and live entertainment even. There have been times that performers would get on stage and perform acts of oral sex, group sex, and other acts of sexual activity, involving not only the performers, but also the Trophy Studs and a few lucky fans as well. There have been other highlights during the ceremonies that have included the use of a dildo on stage and a closing orgy one year that ended with a gay video star ejaculating onto the audience. A Wall of Fame has since been created to honor the legends of the gay video industry, which are given out according to the impact that recipients have had with gay video successes.
