There are almost as many music downloading sites available on the internet as there are stars in the sky - well, not exactly. They are plentiful, however. The trick is to find the one that works best for you and your family. Downloading music is easy, fast, convenient and very affordable. Can you download any music from legal websites for free? Yes and No. Many sites will allow you to download a certain number of songs at no cost to you before you are obliged to become a member. Even memberships, however, are very reasonable. You can often purchase a tune for well under a dollar and sometimes for as little as a quarter. Just be sure you do your homework on the front end --- look around, ask questions and see what is out there. It can not be overstated the vast, vast majority of music download sites are operating according to laws governing such things. There are, however, some vendors who put out music which is considered illegal. This type of music is called pirated, hijacked or in plain terms, stolen. This means the site does not have the permission of the artists, record companies, producers (whomever holds the rights to this music) to distribute the music. Basically, these sites are illegal because they are giving away something (for free) that they have never owned. The music industry has seen losses in the billions of dollars due to pirated music. There are free songs available for legal download, but not too many. In most cases, websites let you download a few freebies. Once youre hooked on this marvelous way to get your music, they are counting on you joining their site as a member. Considering the cost of a single CD (often more than $15), these memberships are downright cheap. In most cases, you can pay monthly or quarterly and cancel at any time. Often, songs will cost well under $1 each sometimes as little as $0.25. If you are visiting a site that promises all music downloads free all the time, beware, you may be dealing with an illegal website. These sites dont actually own the music, so it is not theirs to give away. Some years back, many people got their music downloads this way; that is not the case any longer. Due to stricter laws now in place, people caught downloading music illegally can be prosecuted by law enforcement. Some people are intimidated at the thought of downloading music, but it is a very simple process. Many songs can be downloaded in 30 seconds or less, some slightly longer - still under a minute. As soon as you have downloaded the music, you can save it on your computer (listen to music while you work), portable music player or many of the newer cell phones. You can purchase package deals such as $10 per month for a certain number of songs, etc. and have good quality, legal music available to you at any time. While it seems most people download to MP3 players, quite a few are now downloading music to cell phones, PDAs or directly to their hard drive. You can have music with you wherever you go and it will not cost you an arm and a leg.
