What Does "Wholesale" Mean?

By: David T.

The dictionary definition of 'wholesale' is 'selling goods or merchandise to retailers, industrial, commercial, institutional, or other professional business users, or other wholesalers, usually in large quantities. Wholesale differs from retailing in that, in the latter, it involves direct selling to consumers, wherein in wholesaling, the sale is not directly made to the consumers, but to an intermediary person or for other industrial or commercial purposes, where only large scale purchases are usually made.

In the jewelry domain, wholesale body jewelry manufacturer is a person who sources body jewelry and sells off the same to a retailer in bulk, with a profit. The retailer in this respect can be an online jewelry shop owner or somebody who have a jewelry store selling body jewelry directly to the customers. For a retailer, the advantage with whole sale buying is that he could get the purchase for a far lesser price per piece that when it would be when purchased in smaller consignments. The wholesaler, considering the cost he had incurred while sourcing the jewelry consignment (from various sources may be) would quote a price that would earn him a decent profit. It is the first level of the sales equation, and it involves the cost price-selling price equation in the context of the wholesaler only. But as it reaches to the customers, the equation swells to include the profit margins of the retailers as well, thereby pushing up the price of the jewelry further.

For example, if one manages to buy a piece of stainless steel jewelry for $125 from a jewelry store near his/her place, then actually the wholesale stainless steel jewelry merchant who had sold the jewelry to a retailer would have done it for $70 or so (say). In other words, when a buyer gets to buy a jewelry from a jewelry store - online store as well - actually he/she has to shell out not only the cost of manufacture of the jewelry, but also the retail markup, which may be some more percentage higher than the average cost for which the retailer might have bought it in the first place from the wholesaler.

But, of late, with the advancements in communication technology, especially the internet, jewelry makers are actually bypassing the wholesalers and retailers in the conventional distribution chain to reach to the customers directly so that the above mentioned price hikes can be eliminated completely. In other words, it offers a win-win situation to the manufacturer as well as the buyer as while the former still gets the profit for the manufacturing cost they had expended to produce the jewelry, for the buyers, they don't have to pay anything to cover for the retail/wholesale margins. So, for a Titanium ring that one usually buys for $80, the wholesale Titanium jewelry person might have actually sourced it for as low as $40 or so. When he sells it to a retailer, he might do so for $55, and the retailer in turn sells it to a buyer for $75 depending on the profit margin he seeks.

So, next time, when you want to buy a piece of jewelry, avoid a store that sits at the lower end of the distribution chain, and instead try to get it directly from the makers. Any level below the wholesale illusion jewelry person would mean more cost for you, the buyer.

To find the best prices on quality jewelry, make sure you purchase wholesale silver jewelry. You can find all types of jewelry at direct wholesalers including stainless steel jewelry.
