Any casual walk in public these days will make it it very apparent why there is such a huge demand for diets in America. Did you know that over 60% of Americans are over weight and over 30% are obese? With numbers like those, more and more people are looking for a viable and sustainable answer for weight loss. I really hate to sound so harsh, but your next diet is likely to fail. If peoples diets succeeded then why would they go on diet after diet? Are all the diets really just crap? Or is it possible that the person on the diet has more influence than we are led to believe? That's a good thing because it means you have all the control to make your next diet a slimming success. Just a little change in perspective can truly make the difference between success and failure. The necessary shift is in time expectation. In today's world where we stand in front of the microwave and tell it to hurry up, we have been habitually trained to want results yesterday. Unfortunately, that just sets you up for failure with your diet. The people who truly succeed with a diet long term decide to make a change in habits, to put forth a little more effort, consume better foods, and develop healthy exercise habits. A habit is something you do subconsciously, without thinking. And the only way to get rid of a bad habit, is to replace it with a good one. Were you hoping for something more profound? After all, our society is all about magic diets. Maybe you realize deep down that I am right. If not you are likely to keep searching for a magic pill that solves all your problems. I wish it were like that. Its not. I have tried it both ways and I finally got it right when I realized one thing. At 220lbs and 5'10", I had become the epitome of the Pillsbury dough boy. And I knew I had to do something about it because any healthy human should be able to climb a flight of stairs without losing their breath. As much as I wanted to lose the extra 45 pounds in a few months, I knew that realistically it would take longer. That laid the groundwork for my success. The answer to it all lies in the numbers. At 3500 calories per pound of fat it you will only lose 4 lbs per month when you burn 500 more calories a day more than your metabolism requires for normal operation. At 1250 calories a day you would drop and aggressive 10 pounds a month. So you can see that it could a long time to lose all your weight. By starting your diet with this realism, you set yourself up for success. If you haven't had an emotional breakdown yet, then you will reach all your weight loss goals. But if you start with a really long time to reach your goals, and you can accept that as the worst case scenario and move on then it just gets easier and easier. Start small with one pound a week. When you achieve that then you will start to feel good and it will perpetuate itself. The actual numbers each month don't matter how you feel and how your cloths fit does. In the end a diet program will help you slowly make the changes you need so that when you hit your goal you will realize that it wasn't the diet that did it, it was you. It was you that changed your habits, you that made better choices, and you that took control of your weight and your life.
